How to choose a realistic dildo

A realistic dildo is about feel as much as looks. Think about how firm you like it, how big you really want to go, and what the base needs to do.

Dual density: soft outside, firm inside

A dual density dildo pairs a softer outer layer with a firmer core, so it has some give on the surface but still holds its shape. Many people find this the most lifelike feel. Single-density toys tend to feel either firmer or squishier throughout.

With balls or without

A realistic dildo with balls adds a natural-looking end stop and something to hold, and many people like the visual. Without balls, the base is often slimmer and sits more comfortably in a harness.

Suction cup and harness bases

Most of our realistic dildos have a suction cup base, so they stand up on a smooth, flat surface for hands-free play. Many also fit an O-ring harness, which turns them into a strap-on. The product page says whether a model is harness compatible.

Size: check insertable length and girth

Listed length usually includes the balls or base, so look for insertable length and girth where given. Sizes here range from around 6 inches to statement pieces over a foot long. If you are new to lifelike dildos, a 6 to 7 inch model is a sensible place to start.

Material and lube

Many realistic dildos are silicone, including liquid silicone and dual density silicone options. Some lifelike dildos use PVC, TPE or jelly blends, which are softer and cheaper but more porous, so they need careful cleaning and a condom if shared. Always check the material on the product page. Use a water-based lube with silicone toys, as silicone lube can damage silicone surfaces.

Want vibration too? Browse our vibrators, the wider dildos range, or find a water-based lube to go with it.

Frequently asked

What is a dual density dildo?

One made with two layers: a softer outer skin over a firmer inner core. It is designed to feel more lifelike than a toy that is the same firmness all the way through.

Are realistic dildos silicone?

Many are, but not all. Some use PVC, TPE or jelly, which are more porous. Each product page lists the material, so check before you buy, especially if you prefer silicone.

Can I use a realistic dildo with a harness?

Many of ours fit any O-ring style harness, particularly those with a flat suction cup base. Check the product page for harness compatibility and base size.

Can I use a realistic dildo anally?

Only if it has a flared base, such as a wide suction cup or balls, that stops it slipping in too far. Start small, go slowly and use plenty of lube.

Which lube should I use?

Water-based lube is the safe choice for almost every material. Avoid silicone lube on silicone dildos unless the product page says it is compatible.
